Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious virus that causes severe, lifeāthreatening gastroenteritis in dogs šØ. It can infect dogs yearāround, with puppies, unvaccinated dogs, seniors, and immunocompromised dogs at highest risk. The virus spreads through contact with infected faeces, vomit, saliva, or contaminated environments, objects, and hands. It is extremely resilient ā can survive up to a year and resists many disinfectants. Once infected, the virus rapidly attacks the intestines and bone marrow, leading to dehydration, shock, and even death.
Vetārecommended prevention:
ā Keep core vaccinations up to date ā vaccines are the most critical protection š
ā Avoid exposing puppies to risky environments or dogs of unknown health
ā Clean and disinfect environments regularly and thoroughly
ā Seek immediate vet care if symptoms appear ā do NOT delay
Important note: Mortality in untreated puppies can reach up to 90%!
Common signs: fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, severe vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, dehydration. Antibiotics do NOT cure parvovirus ā they only treat secondary bacterial infections. Early veterinary care and supportive treatment greatly improve survival.
