Canine Parainfluenza Virus (CPiV) is a common, highly contagious virus that causes severe respiratory infections in dogs 🚨. It can infect dogs year‑round, with puppies, dogs in kennels, boarding facilities, and immunocompromised dogs at highest risk. The virus spreads rapidly through droplets, direct contact, and contaminated toys, bowls, and surfaces, and often combines with other pathogens to worsen the condition.
Vet‑recommended prevention:
✅ Keep core vaccinations up to date — vaccines greatly reduce infection risk and severity 💉
✅ Avoid contact with coughing, sniffling, or sick dogs
✅ Maintain good ventilation and regular disinfection
✅ Reduce stress and support a strong immune system
Important note: Common signs include persistent cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, eye discharge, fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Antibiotics do NOT cure parainfluenza — they only prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections. Early veterinary care and supportive treatment speed up recovery.
