Canine Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection šØ that can occur year-round. Dogs with outdoor access, contact with ponds, mud, or wildlife are at highest risk. The bacteria spread through infected urine, contaminated water and soil, attacking the liver and kidneys, which can lead to organ failure and death.
Vetārecommended prevention:
ā Vaccinate against leptospirosis ā available in L2 and L4 formulations, with L4 offering broader coverage š
ā Avoid letting your dog drink from outdoor water sources or lick unknown animal urine
ā Regularly disinfect living areas to reduce bacterial buildup
ā Clean paws after outdoor walks to lower infection risk
Important note: Common signs include fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, increased thirst and urination, jaundice (yellow gums), and lethargy. Early diagnosis and targeted antibiotics greatly improve survival; delayed treatment has a very high mortality rate.
