Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV, commonly known as feline distemper) is an extremely contagious and often fatal viral disease in cats šØ. It can occur yearāround, with kittens, unvaccinated cats, multiācat households, and immunocompromised cats at highest risk. The virus spreads through contact with infected faeces, vomit, secretions, or contaminated toys, bowls, environments, clothing, and hands ā it is highly resilient and can survive in the environment for a long time.
Vetārecommended prevention:
ā Keep core vaccinations up to date ā vaccines are the most critical protection š
ā Strictly isolate new cats before introduction
ā Regular thorough cleaning and disinfection
ā Avoid contact with animals of unknown health status
Important note: Common signs include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, severe vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, dehydration, and pale gums. Antibiotics do NOT cure FPV ā they only control secondary bacterial infections. Seek immediate veterinary care if symptoms appear.
