Feline Herpesvirus Type 1 (FHVā1) is the main cause of feline viral rhinotracheitis, a highly contagiousĀ upper respiratory virus in cats šØ. It can occur yearāround, with kittens, seniors, and immunocompromised cats at highest risk.
The virus spreads through droplets, direct contact, and contaminated toys, bowls, or surfaces. Once infected, cats carry the virus for lifeĀ ā flareāups often happen when stressed or immune systems weaken.
The most effective prevention recommended by vets:
ā Keep core vaccinations up to date ā vaccines greatly reduce severity and outbreaks š
ā Reduce stress and support a strong immune system
ā Isolate sick cats and clean/disinfect regularly
Important note:
Antibiotics do NOT cure herpesĀ ā they only treat secondary bacterial infections. Early vet care and supportive treatment help speed recovery.
