Feline Calicivirus (FCV) is a common, highly contagious virus that causes severe respiratory and oral disease in cats šØ. It can infect cats yearāround, with kittens, multiācat households, and shelter cats at highest risk. The virus spreads through droplets, direct contact, contaminated toys, bowls, surfaces, or even handlerās hands ā with a short incubation period and strong infectivity.
Vetārecommended prevention:
ā Keep core vaccinations up to date ā vaccines greatly reduce severity and outbreaks š
ā Maintain clean environment and regular disinfection
ā Isolate new cats before introduction
ā Reduce stress and support a strong immune system
Important note:Common signs include sneezing, drooling, mouth ulcers, pain when eating, eye discharge, fever, and lethargy. Antibiotics do NOT cure calicivirus ā they only treat secondary bacterial infections. Seek veterinary care early if symptoms appear.
